Information management and ISO 19650: where to look things up

The standards, guidance and tools I point clients to most often. All checked in September 2026, and most are free.

IMI Framework — the official UK home of ISO 19650 standards, guidance and templates, published by BSI and nima. It replaced the UK BIM Framework in 2025, and old links now redirect there.

nima — the UK’s information management organisation. With the Construction Leadership Council it runs the Information Management Initiative (IMI), which is moving the industry from ‘BIM’ to information management.

ISO 19650 revision — draft revisions to Parts 1 and 2 were consulted on in 2026 and are still being redrafted. The current editions remain in force until new ones are published.

The golden thread — the Building Safety Regulator’s guide to the golden thread for higher-risk buildings: what it is, and who is responsible for it.

CLC golden thread guidance — practical guidance for dutyholders and accountable persons from the Construction Leadership Council.

Uniclass 2015 — the UK classification system used to classify information under ISO 19650. Free from NBS.

RIBA Plan of Work 2020 — the stages 0 to 7 that most UK appointments, and our generator, use.

buildingSMART IDS — the international format for writing information requirements that software can check against a model.

Free requirements generator — write your own information requirements document in plain English, with document control and your own logo.
